processingMethod
Extrusion, Wire & Cable
This process coats wire and cable with protective sheathing or insulation. The plastic is first melted in an extruder, which then forces the molten plastic into what is known as a crosshead die. In the crosshead die, the wire is pulled through the die where the molten plastic is applied, exiting the die perpendicular to the axis of the extruder. After the wire passes through the die and is coated with plastic, it immediately enters a water bath to cool the plastic. After cooling, the wire is typically inspected for size and coiled onto a spool.
